I was just an email away from relishing Bahar kay Rung

I have just sent an email to my professor informing him that my return to the UK has been delayed for “personal reasons back home”. Whether I sound convincing is a conversation for another time. Regardless, I was certainly convinced when my girlfriends insisted that I extend my trip to celebrate the annual Spring Basant Festival in Lahore! “Send that email. Years later, we’ll laugh over it!” Years later? We were already laughing. “You can always find a new professor”, one of my friends winked. “Okay, this is serious. Let’s take this moment and celebrate the Basant Festival. Who knows when you’d be back in Pakistan next time.” Email sent…

What is Spring if not for Basant and Love?

I grew up in Lahore before moving to the UK, and eventually life swept away and Lahore seemed like a precious distant memory. Even so, I would often stumble upon the memory of the fascinatingly colorful Basant Festival and our father taking us to watch the kite war, which had always intrigued me.

The crispy spring air testified that winter still lingered at the door. The colorful attires, the bright eccentric kites and numerous food stalls serving soup, fries, samosas, popcorns, jalebis, hot chai and what not were the highlights of the season! My mouth watered with the thought as my friends made themselves comfortable in my hotel room. The hotel was neat and buzzing with tourists from all over Pakistan anxiously waiting for the kite festival the next morning.

There was a knock at the door and we received an invite to attend a small gathering in the hotel lobby. The banner read, “The Origins of Basant”.

“This was the passion of the great Maharaja Ranjit Singh who adored kites and colors, after his wife! He ruled over the beloved sub-continent in the early 1800s and held Basant Fairs, “Spring Fairs”, my dear guests, with the sport of kite flying being the main feature of the festivals. He and his queen would dress in yellow and fly kites together. What a love, what a passion!”, the host who was also dressed in yellow spoke enthusiastically. With the interest he displayed, he could have been the modern Maharaja Ranjit Singh!

Choose your outfit for the Basant Festival

The host just hit a nerve…

“Clothes… Oh, man! What are we gonna wear for the Basant Festival?”, I whispered to the girls and a feeling of emergency penetrated the air between us.

“Oh, no! How could we forget?”

“What’s the time? The stores would be open, perhaps, we’ll find something good.”

“We would request the crowds to respect the passion of the Great Maharaja Ranjit Singh tomorrow, and come dressed in your best clothes with your kites and celebrate the Colors of Spring, “Bahar Kay Rung”. Eat, drink and be merry!”, the host concluded while the lobby echoed the endless claps and hoots of the crowds.

I had opened my phone to check the time when EGO’s advertisement popped up on the screen and read, “Bahar Kay Rung | New Arrivals!”

I almost screamed! “What in the sorcery is that!”

“Manifestation”.

“Telepathy.”

“A sign from above! Let’s go!”

This is your sign: Shop EGO!

When there is a will, there is a way!

We booked a cab and rushed to EGO located at the Packages Mall just half an hour before it was expected to close. You could spot the bright tones hanging inside the store even from afar as though the whole of spring had bloomed inside EGO!

“Girls, discipline yourselves. One outfit is enough for the festival.”

“One?”, and we all laughed.

A staff member smilingly informed us that the collection was called, “Bahar Kay Rung”, and that it was getting sold out rapidly. I was not surprised and helped myself first to a yellow outfit which would doubtlessly be the outfit for the festival. Then I grabbed a pink 2 piece, then a blue, a green and a couple more until I collided into my friend who herself seemed to be draped with styles!

The girls and I met at the counter shamelessly giggling because EGO made it seem like we lacked patience and discipline.

“But who cares? The fashion industry would perhaps collapse if not for women”, we consoled each other.

Colors of Spring: Bahar Kay Rung

The next morning, the lobby seemed to be swarming with the colors of spring and the girls and I looked our best draped in EGO’s spring collection. We got our kites, and headed to a long day of an exciting Basant Festival. The sky was hardly visible through the bright, colorful kites flying in the wind; the music of Punjab and the sweet smell of the Lahori food infested the air around us. We flew our kites and our hearts swelled with joy. A sweet lady complimented our outfits and asked where we got them from. We happily told her about EGO and she claimed that it was her favorite brand, too!

Years later, when I am married and old and my grandkids ask me about an adventurous trip, the Basant Festival and how EGO saved the day would surely top the list!
